Overview
One of Africa’s largest wilderness areas, Nyerere National Park — formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve — offers an unrivaled, raw safari experience. Covering a staggering 30,000 square kilometers (bigger than Switzerland!), it’s a place where nature still reigns supreme. The park is crossed by the mighty Rufiji River, creating a unique mix of wetlands, savannahs, forests, and lakes that support an incredible variety of wildlife.
It’s one of the best places to see African wild dogs, alongside lions, leopards, buffalo, giraffes, and elephants. Hippos and crocodiles dominate the river channels, while flocks of African skimmers and pelicans patrol the water’s edge. Boat safaris along the Rufiji are a highlight — a rare experience that lets you glide past pods of hippos and basking crocs, unlike the usual vehicle-based safaris. You can also enjoy walking safaris and fly camping for an even more immersive adventure.
The best time to visit is June to October for dry, cooler weather and excellent wildlife viewing, especially around the rivers and waterholes. The wet season from November to March transforms the park into a lush green paradise, perfect for birdwatching and seeing newborn animals.
