Overview
Nyerere National Park, covering 30,893 square kilometers, is the largest national park in Tanzania and also among the world’s largest. The Park was recently carved out of the Selous Game Reserve, and named, Nyerere National Park, after the first President of Tanzania Mwalimu Julius kambarage Nyerere. The Park does not have as many visitors as other Tanzanian parks hence it is hardly disturbed by tourist activities, so it offers a wilder and more private atmosphere. It home to the Big 5, and a considerable population of wild dogs. The park’s Rufiji River is also home to large populations of crocodiles and hippopotamuses making Nyerere National Park a perfect place for game drives. A Dar es Salaam – Nyerere National Park drive takes around 5 to 6 hours. It is more common for tourists to take a roughly 45 minutes flight to Nyerere National Pak and Selous Game Reserve from Dar es Salaam instead. There are also flights available from Zanzibar to the park though these flight are likely to have brief stops in Dar es Salaam or other regions. Aircrafts to Nyerere National Park land at a variety of airstrips spread around the park.
