Overview
Gombe Stream is a place where wildlife meets legend. This small, forested park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is world-famous thanks to Dr. Jane Goodall, who conducted her groundbreaking chimpanzee research here in the 1960s. Visiting Gombe is like stepping into a living, breathing documentary — you’ll follow forest trails to observe wild chimpanzees up close, watching them forage, groom, and play in their natural environment.
Beyond the chimps, Gombe is alive with other primates like olive baboons, red colobus monkeys, and blue monkeys. The park’s rich birdlife and beautiful landscapes — with steep valleys, waterfalls, and the shimmering lake — create an intimate, off-the-beaten-path adventure.
The best time to visit is July to October and December to February when chimpanzees are easier to find, and the weather is dry enough for hiking through the dense forest.
